Today marks the 25th anniversary of my bar mitzvah.

I suppose this calls for some sort of interspection, but the first thing that came to mind what I asked myself about the meaning of this is:
Why aren't bar mitzvah anniversaries celebrated, or even noted? We make this huge frickin' deal about the ceremony, it happens and then that's it.

The only other Jewish ceremony that gets this kind of hype a wedding, and anniversaries are considered very important. Funerals are recognized with yartzhiets and births with birthdays. But Bar Mitzvahs? Nothing!

Well, unless you live to 83, in which case you get another Bar Mitzvah, but don't expect as many presents.

So for 25 years, I've been a man. I think that means I finally got my acne under control, I have to shave way more often than I do, I'm not afraid to talk to girls and for the most part, I can take care of myself without my parents help.

I still kinda feel like a teenager, only I get more dates now. Probably because around the time of my bar mitzvah, I also discovered regular bathing, deodorant and conditioner. I've always been a slow learner.

And it opens a question that I've wondered since before Prop 8 started rolling around. It's the idea of escalation. The current perception is that marraige is between two consenting adults with the debate is that it can or cannot be a same-sex couple.

The argument for same sex marraige is that it is an equal rights issue. I'm fine with this. Gays are being treated as second class because they are being denied a right that straight people have. Fine.

But what about the poly community? Are they second class because marraige is defined as TWO people?

and then (because we are playing devil's advocate) how far does this go? Are we being ageist? Speciesist? Antinepotistic? because we don't want people marrying their underage monkey uncle?

I just wonder - and moreso as I approach my own marraige - what is the purpose of marraige as a legal institution at all - and from that answer - why couldn't any two or more things marry each other?

well, ok, pie rules, then meat. unless the potatoes are really good. then it's 1) Pie 2) Potatoes 3) Meat. But that's it!

Well, stuffings really good, but it has to have meat juice in it. And bacon. I like cranberries too. Does that count as a side? And where do the yams fit in? Can we put meat in the yams? Oh, and the string bean casserole which I'm not supposed to eat because of the cream of mushroom soup, but I do anyway. Maybe I'll eat that when nobody's watching. Because really it's all about the meat. Well, after the pie....

Thanks to [info]joedecker for the news that not all is lost.

Here's my bittersweetness and I know ya'll are thinking it. America only broke racial barriers because the economy tanked. What do we have to do to convince California (and Florida and Arizona) that gay marriage isn't going to destroy society?

I think from a constitutional law point of view, Prop 8 will have to be thrown out because state constitutions cannot override the U.S. Constituion. Let's close out with Amendment 14, section 1:

Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State (EVEN CALIFORNIA!) shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.

Nov. 4th, 2008 11:52 am Voting in NOPA

This was the first time I've voted in San Francisco since 1994. I don't remember hour long lines and wacky propositions like Prop R, renaming a sewage plant after W.

It's a amazing to be in an area where everyone is so involved and passionate and wearing fabulous shoes all at the same time. Fashion and politics can mix!

Ever since the Castro Halloween party closed, I've struggled for what to do on a holiday where Fun is turned into a religious experience. Fate helped me decide as tonight Brass Farthing will perform at



The plan was brilliant - take the train to Sunnyvale, party all night, come home in the morning.

Alas - I forgot that I have my nephew's Bar Mitzvah tomorrow morning at 9:30 AM.....

IN FRICKIN' LOS ANGELES!

So now the plan is drive to Sunnyvale. Sing from 8-10pm. Drive 6 hours to Frickin' LA. Pass out for 3-4 hours. Endure a day of Bar Mitzvah festivities. Drive home Sunday. OY VEY! What kid gets bar mitvah'd on All Saints Day!
